Empowering the Next Generation: Climate Education at Ilays Junior High
Gargaar Guud delivers essential environmental learning materials to students in Qararsoor to build a climate-resilient future.
Qararsoor, Puntland – Somalia | 13 November 2025 — Gargaar Guud, in partnership with Nues Epidos as its technical collaborator, has delivered a comprehensive set of Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials on environmental and climate change education to Ilays Junior High School in Qararsoor, Puntland.
The handover event took place last week, benefiting the school’s population of over 300 students.
This initiative reinforces ongoing efforts to strengthen climate literacy and environmental stewardship among young people in Puntland—an increasingly critical need as Somalia continues to face intensifying climate pressures, including recurrent droughts, water scarcity, and land degradation. Equipping students with contextual, age-appropriate environmental knowledge is essential for shaping a more resilient future generation.
The IEC materials were adapted to the Somali context by Nues Epidos, who provided technical support in educational content development, visual adaptation, and contextualization. The materials cover key themes such as:
- Climate change causes and local impacts
- Water conservation and sustainable resource use
- Biodiversity protection
- Waste management and environmental hygiene
- Community and school-based environmental actions
Designed to be visually engaging and pedagogically sound, the materials will assist teachers in integrating environmental and climate concepts into classroom instruction and extracurricular climate clubs.
Speaking during the handover, representatives from Gargaar Guud highlighted the significance of the intervention:
“Climate education is foundational for building environmentally responsible communities. By equipping young learners with the right knowledge today, we are preparing Puntland for a healthier, more climate-resilient future.”
The leadership of Ilays Junior High expressed appreciation for the support, noting that the materials will enrich classroom delivery and improve student understanding of environmental issues directly affecting their communities.
This intervention aligns with Puntland’s broader goals of strengthening climate awareness, promoting environmental sustainability, and embedding environmental consciousness within the education sector.
Gargaar Guud intends to extend similar support to other schools across Puntland as part of its commitment to environmental education and community resilience.
